Q. What exactly is a tan?

A Long exposure to the sun usually causes the skin to become a shade or few darker, this is known as a tan. A tan actually is the skin trying to protect itself from sun damage. When ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate the skin, they trigger the production of melanin, a dark brown pigment, as a way of shielding the skin from burning.
