Some might have heard of glucose under another name – blood sugar. It is a monosaccharide, which means it consists of one sugar. Other such monosaccharides are galactose, fructose and ribose. If someone suffering from any illness, trauma or any other medical condition that prevents the person from getting the required dose of carbohydrate content, glucose is beneficial in balancing the required calories that would otherwise come from the carbohydrates. It also helps patients suffering from hyperkalemia, which means high levels of potassium in the blood.

How To Make Glucose At Home
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 tbsp cornflour
- 1/3 tbsp citric acid
- 6-7 drops flavour essence of choice
- ¼ teaspoon of food colouring of choice
- Airtight container
- Whisk together the sugar and cornflour into a fine powder in a mixer.
- Add the flavour essence like orange, mango, pineapple, etc.
- Get corresponding food colouring and ¼ teaspoon. Mix this well.
- Add the citric acid to this which adds a hint of a sour taste and also helps preserve the powder.
- Once it is thoroughly mixed, store in an airtight container. This can be kept for six months.
To make the energy drink
Add two tablespoons of this powder to a glass of water and mix well till the powder is dissolved.
Tip: Opt for organic flavours and food colours for best results for your health.
Culinary Uses Of Glucose Powder
Glucose powder, apart from being used as a source of instant energy, has many culinary uses too. It is used in quite a few baking products like frostings and cake mixes, or snacks like crackers, cookies or pretzels as also dessert dishes like ice creams and custards. It helps avoid any crystallisation of water and hence is good to use in ice creams and sorbets. It keeps the food item smooth in confectionaries.
Recipes Using Glucose Powder
Orange Glucose flowers
Prep time: 20 minutes
Refrigeration time: 1 hour

- 5-6 bread slices
- 2 tsp orange-flavoured glucose powder
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2-3 tsp low-fat milk
- Cut off the edges of the bread and crumble it.
- Add the glucose powder, sugar, and milk and bind it into a dough.
- Make small balls of the dough and shape them into petals. Arrange the shaped petals like a flower, place a smaller ball in the middle and flatten it down to complete the flower. You can decorate/design the petals with a toothpick. Similarly, make all the flowers.
- Refrigerate them flowers for an hour and your glucose flowers are ready!
Tip: These make a good snack for children. You can make them from other flavours of glucose powder too.

Refrigeration time: 2 hours + (for berries)
- ½ cup of frozen mixed berries
- ½ cup spinach
- 1 tbsp glucose powder
- 1 tsp of chia or flax seeds
- ¾ cup Greek yoghurt
- 1 tsp sugar-free sweetener (if required for taste)
- Mix all ingredients in a blender. You can add a cube or two of ice if you want the smoothie colder.

A. Usually, the healthy range of glucose in the body is 90–130 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) before eating. An hour or two after a meal, it should be less than 180 mg/dL.

A. While the above-mentioned range is the average range of glucose levels, it can differ from person to person. Keeping a track of the glucose level, even when feeling fit and fine, can help one determine what’s normal for that particular person.
